SetViz 2.0

See set theory, don't just memorise it.

01

What SetViz is

SetViz is a teaching aid for introductory statistics and discrete mathematics. You pick a set operation and the Venn diagram shades exactly the region that operation describes — so the notation and the picture are always side by side.

It is built for the moment a student can recite that ∩ means "and" but still shades the wrong region. Seeing (A ∩ B)′ light up is more convincing than being told what it means.

Who it is for

Students meeting set notation for the first time, and teachers who want something to project and click through in front of a class. No account, no installation — it runs in a browser and keeps working offline once loaded.

A ∩ B shaded — one of seven stages

02

What it teaches

Seven stages, each building on the one before — Basics, Union & Intersection, Complement & Difference, Subset & Disjoint, Three Sets, De Morgan's Laws, and a Quiz. Every stage can also be opened directly, in any order. The manual has the full stage-by-stage breakdown.

03

How to use it

1

Pick a stage

Use the row of tabs across the top, the Back and Next buttons, or the arrow keys.

2

Click an operation

The diagram shades immediately, and a plain-English explanation appears underneath.

3

Finish at the quiz

Nothing is graded or recorded, so wrong answers cost nothing.

The user manual walks through every part of the interface in detail, and includes a suggested lesson route.

Project history

SetViz began in October 2025 as a single-page teaching aid and has been developed openly ever since. Every version is public, tagged and dated in the project's repository.

Version 1.0 · October 2025 – August 2026

The first release established the approach that still defines the tool: a student picks an operation, and the diagram shades exactly the region it describes, with a teaching note alongside.

Introduced

  • The core interaction — pick an operation, the diagram shades the exact region
  • Seven stages, from the universal set through to De Morgan's Laws
  • A teaching note alongside every stage
  • A separate user manual, added April 2026

Silver medal · DIIID 2026

This is the version entered into the DIIID 2026 innovation competition, and the build described in the accompanying extended abstract. It was released publicly under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence in August 2026.

Version 2.0 · September 2026

A substantial rework of both the interface and the teaching content, built on a new foundation: every operation is now defined as a plain true-or-false rule over the individual regions of the diagram. That one change is what made the rest possible.

New in this version

  • Three-set diagrams — eight regions instead of four, including bracketed expressions
  • Switchable set arrangements (overlapping, subset, disjoint, equal), independent of the operation
  • Real numbers dropped into their regions, with the counting formula evaluated live
  • Quiz rebuilt with per-region marking, score, streak, and a three-set hard mode
  • De Morgan's Laws as a side-by-side visual proof, not just another operation
  • Redesigned interface and a rewritten manual
  • Scenario questions — an optional quiz toggle that rephrases prompts as real-world word problems instead of raw notation

The original published address still resolves, so links printed before this release continue to work.
